FROM THE EDGE, A STORY AWAKENS.
In 2006 Mia T. Starr submitted a chapter from her MORNING SUN, a historical fiction in progress, to the Glimmer Train Fiction Open Contest. In October of that year, Mia received an email from Linda Swanson-Davies of Glimmer Train, who wrote:
Although "Clouds" didn't make it all the way to the Top 25, it did make it a long, long, LONG way through the judging process and was indeed a finalist--it is a beautiful piece! (Sometimes we just can't limit ourselves to 25 pieces, but this still puts your submission in the top 3%.) Be sure to mention its finalist status as you send it back out into the world. We look forward to reading your next piece, Mia.
Today Mia is working on revisions to MORNING SUN, a novel set in Viet Nam and inspired by her father's seventy-five page, handwritten journal. The story takes place from 1944 to 1975—a time beset by famine, sacrifices, doubts, and two wars. MORNING SUN is about an ordinary Vietnamese boy's survival, courage, and hope.
In 2010 a Twitter follower and reader of Mia's blog posts on her journey into writing asked if she would share an excerpt from her MORNING SUN. Mia overcame her fears and shared scenes from her work in progress. She remains grateful to her readers for their boundless support and encouragement, to the literary agents who asked for more chapters, and to editor Alan Rinzler who wrote: "I like the new opening very much. Good work. Keep going."
